Dutch silver stamps about railways

These silver stamps were issued in 2022.
22-03-2022: 3737 Jumbo

The steam locomotive on this silver stamp is the No. 3737 Jumbo, one of the most successful Dutch steam locomotives. It owed its tough nickname to its imposing appearance and pulling power. In 1958 it was the last steam train to be taken out of service.

Locomotive 3737, the original SS 731, built in 1911 by Werkspoor, made its first test drive between Amsterdam and Utrecht on August 28, 1911. She was officially commissioned on September 11, 1911. Locomotive 3737 (from depot Roosendaal) ran on 7 January 1958 the last official NS steam train from Geldermalsen to Utrecht Maliebaan station, where the Dutch Railway Museum was already located at that time. The locomotive 3737 was subsequently included in the collection of the museum. In the 1970s, the NS 3737 was made roadworthy again to be used for special journeys. In the 1974 and '75 seasons, the locomotive was leased to the Stichting Stoomtrein Tilburg-Turnhout (SSTT), which operated a tourist train service on part of the Tilburg - Turnhout railway line. The 3737 played an important role in the anniversary celebration of 150 years of Railways in the Netherlands in 1989. In the years that followed, the locomotive, which is home to the Railway Museum, has occasionally been active on the railway network. In 1996 she got a completely new boiler with a new firebox. It was the intention to use the locomotive on a regular basis, but it broke down after a few rides. When appropriate repairs were needed in 2008, the Railway Museum announced that it wanted to use part of a subsidy received from the BankGiro Loterij for this, but at the end of 2008 the amount turned out to be insufficient.

14-06-2022: NS2530 Bisschop

Silver stamp of NS 2530 The Bishop.
Because the view from the cab of a 2400 was not so good, especially in train service, the last locomotive, delivered in 1957, was fitted with lower engine hoods and a different cab as a test. The cab is higher and longer and offers better comfort and views than that of its series counterparts. The 2530 entered service in a different color: lilac with black undercarriage, which gave the locomotive the nickname of the bishop. This special color was chosen by the wife of F.Q. den Hollander, CEO of the NS, who had ordered the locomotive. In 1963 the locomotive turned red brown, just like the rest of the series. This locomotive was often used for work trains and was the pulling power of the spray train from 1964 to 1989.

13-09-2022: NS836 Hondekop

Silver stamp of NS 836 Dog's Head.
The NS Mat '54 or Materieel '54 was an electric multiple unit train, used by the Dutch State-owned railways from 1956 until 1996. The typical nose of the train was designed for extra safety for the train driver. The public gave the train a nickname: Dog's Head (Hondekop).
The trains were built by Allan of Rotterdam, Beijnes and Werkspoor. Equipped with a Scharfenberg coupler, they could run in series. Not only with the same model but also with older models, the NS Mat '35, NS Mat '36, NS Mat '40 and NS Mat '46. The trains were intended for express train services. Rapid acceleration was of less importance than comfort and therefore the trains were solidly constructed, which resulted in a relatively high weight per seat and gave a very smooth and (for that time) very comfortable run. It is still the heaviest passenger train type to ever ride a European railway. The train needed three minutes to accelerate to a speed of a 120 km/h. The trains were painted in green and yellow. In 1968 a new yellow blue color scheme was introduced. It took until 1980 that the last train was painted in new colors. The reason why it took twelve years was the fact that the green paint lasted very well and the Dutch railways tried to cut costs wherever possible.
Two of these trains were involved in the 1975 Dutch train hostage crisis and 1977 Dutch train hijacking.

15-11-2022: Frontrunner (koploper)

Silver stamp of the NS Frontrunner (Koploper in Dutch).
Frontrunner is the nickname of Intercity Materieel or ICM (English – Intercity Material or Intercity Rolling Stock), an electric multiple unit (EMU) train type operated by the Nederlandse Spoorwegen in the Netherlands. It received this nickname because it had a so-called "walk through head". After these trains were modernized, the "walk through heads" were removed. The modernized train sets are referred to as Intercity Materieel Modern (ICMm).
The prototypes were built in 1977, with full-scale production lasting from 1983 to 1994 by Talbot. The first train sets came into service in 1977. The trains run daily on the Dutch rail network and, together with the VIRM, form the most important equipment on services connecting the Randstad with the rest of the country. The trains are designed for long-distance intercity services. Their maximum allowed operating speed is 140km/h, although their engines are designed to reach a top speed of 180km/h. Their cabs are on the roof, which initially allowed through gangways between sets when coupled together, though the gangways were removed during their refurbishment, as they were deemed too unreliable. Refurbishment of sets began in late 2006 and was completed in 2011. The trains have compartments in the 1st class accommodation.
